Archival Education and Research Institutes (AERI)
Please join other faculty and doctoral students at our annual Archival Education and Research Institutes. The fourth institute will take place on UCLA campus.
Applying to this year's Institute does not exclude you from applying in subsequent years. In fact, we encourage all participants to attend as many of the Institutes as possible.

About the Institutes (top)
Funded by two four-year grants from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, annual week-long Archival Education and Research Institutes (AERI) are being hosted by partner institutions. Past institutes were held at UCLA in 2009, University of Michigan Ann Arbor in 2010, and Simmons College in 2011. Future hosts for the Institute will be UCLA in 2012, University of Texas at Austin in 2013, University of Pittsburgh in 2014, and University of North Carolina in 2015. The Institutes are designed to strengthen education and research and support academic cohort-building and mentoring. Institutes are open to all academic faculty working and doctoral students working in Archival Studies, both nationally and internationally.
A second component is the encouragement of a larger and more diverse cohort of doctoral students in Archival Studies. The Emerging Archival Scholars Program
(2011-2015) provides up to six scholarships to attend AERI 2012 as well
as additional mentoring and research opportunities for minority
students at the undergraduate and graduate levels who are considering a
doctoral degree in Archival Studies. The Archival Education and Research (AER) Doctoral Fellows
comprise two cohorts (2009 and 2010) of doctoral students who have been
awarded 4-year fellowships to undertake a doctoral program focusing on
Archival Studies at one of the eight participating colleges or
universities through competitive 4-year Fellowships.
The goal of AERI is to advance the field of Archival Studies in the following ways:
1. Create a dynamic community of researchers, teachers, and students to help mentor doctoral students and faculty in areas such as thesis writing, grant writing, publishing, and career development.
2. Advance curriculum development in Archival Studies.
3. Further current research development through presentations, posters, and workshop activities.
4. Foster interest in future collaborations both nationally and internationally.
AERI will provide a dynamic venue for archival researchers and teachers to interact in an intensive, collegial collaborative environment.
Eligibility for the Institute (top)
All incoming and continuing doctoral students, recently graduated doctoral students, and faculty undertaking research and teaching activities from any U.S. or non-U.S. institution are eligible to attend. However, places are limited so please pay close attention to the application procedures and deadline.
Doctoral Student and Un-tenured Ladder Faculty Scholarships to Attend AERI 2012 (top)
A limited number of scholarships are available for doctoral students and un-tenured ladder faculty on a competitive basis to attend the Institute. Students and faculty attending a school outside of the United States are not eligible to apply for the scholarship, but are still welcome and encouraged to apply to attend the Institute.
Doctoral students and un-tenured ladder faculty interested in applying for one of the available scholarships must provide a full curriculum vitae and a personal statement in addition to the completed application form. Guidelines for this statement may be found in the application form located on the AERI website.
